This picture has always gotten an un-called-for bad rap. The cinematography was absolutely beautiful & Basil Poledouris' soundtrack was, standard for his work, perfect. The story in the film was taken from a very well-received novel published in 1908, which it followed surprisingly closely in spirit & in content, & which was followed by 2 more entries into the 1920s. All of the elements that were so unjustly controversial within this film (actually the 3rd version ever produced) were present in that book, but people in the more "prudish" early part of the 20th century were far more accepting than those of over 70 years later. Even the acting by Brooke Shields & Christopher Atkins has been described as being much worse than it truly was. People have seemed incapable of understanding that those 2 characters were, in many ways, a pair of 9 year-olds in the physical bodies of young adults, with the biological development & inclinations of their age but having never been taught to "grow up" as children not stranded alone would have been. So, their personalities & speech patterns, etc. were naturally a strange combination of child & adult. When you read the novel, they both come across as very like the way they were depicted on film. Anyway .....

This movie pretty much sums up my teenage years. Painful and lonely. Amanda was my dream girl for so long. I was absolutely crushed by her death. I still am. I cannot wath the movie or listen to this music without tearing up. I just cant.
